1995 Season In Review

The 1995 season promised to be one of great challenge for the Cowboy soccer squad. After losing nine seniors to graduation from a 1994 team that finished with a respectable 6-6-2 district record (10-9-2 overall) and taking fourth place in one of the premier districts in Texas, 1995 looked to be a year of rebuilding. In addition, Coach Griffin decided in the best interests of building a strong team it was imperative to play challenging pre-district opponents. With that goal in mind he scheduled two 5-A 1994 playoff schools for scrimmages and one 5-A and one 4-A 1994 playoff schools for pre-district competition. To further test the Cowboys he entered the team in the prestigious Denton High School Tournament where the squad would eventually encounter three 5-A 1995 playoff teams and one other strong 5-A school. The Cowboys also hosted their own tournament capturing the Consolation Trophy. The Pokes finished pre-district play with a 4-5-0 record.

The district race got off to a remarkably great start proving the value of playing tough pre-district opponents. Griffin again utilized a 3-5-2 system of play and the boys won their first seven district games setting a new school record for most district games won and longest winning streak in district play. This was accomplished with a team that had only nine players with varsity experience. After losing a close game to district rival Denton Ryan in the second round of district play, the Cowboys continued undefeated through the remainder of district play to finish 11-1-0 and claim their first ever district crown. The Cowboys' season ended in the Area playoff where they lost to neighboring rival Grapevine, 3-1. Despite this loss the Pokes had in the span of four years proved they could be competitive with the best teams in the area.
