Season Perspective
This was a difficult season for the Cowboys. We struggled for much of the season trying to find that elusive ingredient essential to all successful teams: team chemistry. Soccer is a team sport and the difference in us this year is that we never developed that cohesion necessary to be successful. But I say, don't judge us by our record, but look at how hard we played and look at our effort. We moved from a "soft" district last year to one of the most competitive districts in North Texas this year. The comparison is leaps and bounds over last year. This year we began with only three returning starters from our district championship team of last year (Allen, Virgil, and Nathan). This was clearly a rebuilding year for us. It was much more challenging going out this year seeking the right combination of players to compete and playing teams that were every bit our equal; on any given night any team could have beaten another. Our record reflects that with three ties in district and six overall. We played to overtime in six games which resulted in a 2-1-3 record for overtimes. This stat clearly reflects our effort. In addition, every team we played in pre-district this year went on to make the playoffs and we tied or beat nine of those ten opponents.
Losing isn't fun, but our mood is upbeat. We have some positives to reflect on such as winning the championship of the Coppell Tournament for the second year in a row; winning third place in the prestigious Duncanville Tournament; completing our sixth straight winning season; and we will have five starters returning next year around which to build a solid competitor next year. We had an excellent junior varsity team this year which finished the season tied for first place. We're going to improve, and although we don't have a monopoly on this because other teams in our district are going to improve also, I believe you will find Coppell back in the winner's circle in 1998
